The purpose of the prayer: ‘That they may all be one, that they may be one in us, that they may be one, even as We are one.’ The purpose of unity : that “the world may believe that Thou hast sent me.” 2 Unity! – this is the most leading petition in our Lord’s prayer. No one can ask a stronger proof of the value of unity among Christians and the sinfulness of division and the great prominence which our Master assigns to the subject in this passage. In every age, division remained the greatest scandal and the greatest weakness of the Church of Christ.
